Today is Tuesday...we've been here for five days now and feeling a bit exhausted from pounding the streets and generally taking in all these new experiences, catching trains, finding interesting landmarks and so on. So today we are lying low and resting to be able to attack again with new vigour tomorrow.
On the weekend just passed we tried to see the Tower but it was closed .... we were too early....then The Globe Theatre but it was fully booked, then Westminster Cathedral, but that was closed on the Sunday.
We did stumble upon an exhibition of Tracey Emin, though, which cost us 12 pounds each to get into....and wonder if it was worth it. (For those who don't know of her she is a contemporary artist...very successful here.) She does things that seem so confronting but everyone flocks to see it (us too) ....I guess the used tampons on little pillows was the low light for me, but of course, there would be something like that in her show. Something to do with womanly things I guess. She is a publicity hound and knows what grabs attention, but I guess we could all fart in public but would we be lauded for it? I must be missing something important here. I liked her tapestries though....full of stitched notations and expletives. I've gotta find something to like!.
That was Sunday....Monday we got about to look at Dirk's old stomping ground in Earls Court...a favourite pub of the Aussies back in the early '70s where Bazza McKenzie introduced the Poms to the best of Australians indulging in beer related activities. The expressions: "chunder down under, pointing Percy at the porcelain ... and calling for Ruth' made their auspicious entry into the Aussie lexicon. This iconic spot is now a pretty quiet little pub in a back street, smelling of new paint and doing a very reasonable lunch...but we were the only Aussies there.
We caught a number 11 double decker bus and spent a happy hour doing the rounds of the city. It saved our feet and Dirk's back which has been a real problem for him. We got off at the Liverpool station which was the end of the line anyway, and walked back to have a look at St. Paul's cathedral. Very nice... I didn't realize that Charles and Diana were married here....I thought it was the other one...Westminster.
We stumbled home after catching another train and went to bed early...around 9 PM and it's still light!
